Mexico City has unveiled Xoli, an AI-powered chatbot designed to provide instant information on city services, cultural attractions, and tourism options. Available now via WhatsApp in both English and Spanish, Xoli aims to streamline access to official data and enhance visitor experience.
Preparing for the 2026 World Cup and Beyond
The chatbot’s development was strategically timed to accommodate the influx of visitors expected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, city officials emphasize that Xoli is not a temporary solution; it will remain active post-tournament to support ongoing economic activities and improve public service accessibility.
“Xoli will be the technological instrument that will link culture, tourism, recreation, and entertainment with the population,” stated Clara Brugada, head of Mexico City’s government.
How Xoli Works
Developed through collaboration between the Digital Agency for Public Innovation and local Ministries of Tourism and Culture, Xoli operates 24/7. Users can access it by sending the word “Hola” to the WhatsApp number +55 6565 9395. The bot will then prompt for language preference (English or Spanish) before presenting a menu of categories: culture, tourism, gastronomy, mobility, or allowing direct questions.
During the World Cup, a dedicated section will offer real-time updates on matches, events, ticket availability, and viewing locations.
Expanding Digital Infrastructure
Xoli is part of a broader effort to modernize Mexico’s digital infrastructure in anticipation of major events like the World Cup. The federal government recently unveiled the “Mexico 2026 Social World Cup” plan, which includes over 177 festivities, 5,000 related activities, and the rehabilitation of 4,200 public sports spaces. The Conoce México app, developed by the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications, will further assist visitors with travel and event details.
This push towards digital solutions highlights a growing recognition of technology’s potential to enhance tourism, promote cultural engagement, and improve urban living. Mexico City’s investment in AI-powered tools like Xoli demonstrates a commitment to innovation and accessibility in the face of increasing global mobility.
With over 3,000 daily tourist, recreational, and cultural events, streamlining access to reliable information is more critical than ever. Xoli represents a significant step towards meeting that demand.
