Apple’s Live Translation feature, announced alongside the AirPods Pro 3, brings the science fiction concept of instant language interpretation to reality. It allows users to translate conversations in real-time directly through their AirPods, eliminating language barriers during calls and in-person interactions.
Compatibility and Requirements
The feature isn’t limited to the newest AirPods models. It works with AirPods 4 (with noise cancellation), AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and the 2026 AirPods Max version. However, your iPhone must meet specific requirements: an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 16, or iPhone 17, running iOS 26 or later. This is because the translation process relies on on-device processing power to ensure privacy.
Setting Up Live Translation
First, ensure Apple Intelligence is enabled in your iPhone settings (Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri). Next, specify the languages you’ll be translating from and to within the AirPods settings (Settings > AirPods > Languages). Apple emphasizes that all processing happens locally on your device; no conversations are sent to Apple’s servers. This is a key reason for the hardware and software prerequisites.
Using Live Translation in Practice
There are three primary methods to activate Live Translation:
- Apple Translate App: Open the Translate app, tap the “Live” button, select languages, and start the conversation.
- AirPod Gestures: Press and hold the stems on both AirPods simultaneously.
- Siri Command: Simply say, “Siri, start live translation.”
Once active, you’ll hear translations in your chosen language directly through your AirPods. If speaking, your words are translated for the other person—either displayed as text on your iPhone screen or played through the device’s speakers. To end the translation, tap the “X” button on the screen.
Potential Issues
Apple acknowledges that AI-powered translations can occasionally be inaccurate, unexpected, or even offensive. Users should be prepared for such errors, as real-time translation is still imperfect.
The Live Translation feature represents a significant step toward seamless global communication, but requires specific hardware and software to function effectively. The on-device processing ensures privacy, though occasional translation errors may occur.
